One can only envy the local scribes who have to file two or three articles on the back of a Jimmy Thelin press conference. As we stated last week, the cool calm and collected Swede, keeps his cards firmly underneath his fashionable Scandi-knitwear.
From a fan perspective however, it is wonderfully reassuring to have a manager who gives little away, shows respect for the opponent and steers well clear of any potential controversy.
You can read his full press conference on the club website but a couple of points of note are worth sharing.
Importance of Supporters
“I am looking forward to the game this weekend, it’s a new game at home at Pittodrie. After the cup game, I feel how the supporters stayed with us the whole game and gave us their support. It was still 0-0 but there was no frustration. They keep pushing the team. We’re trying to create this atmosphere at Pittodrie, we are doing a journey together. We are all in the same boat and we need to be strong there. Sometimes it’s rough water but we still need to keep going. We fight to the end and finally win the game. For me, it has a huge impact for the players when the fans are supporting until the end of the games and they did and that was really important for us.”
On the Current Squad
“We have some ideas, some visions for the future. You see now Jack Milne played in the last game and did really well. Pape and Vinnie have done some really good things on the pitch as well. You look at the training sessions and everybody is competing. My focus is with them right now. You always have to respect the windows. It can be in both directions. Someone can come for our players so you always have to be prepared and think about the long term but also working in the short term and prepare for the games and pushing the players here, see them grow, how the team spirit is when we celebrate the goals. Everybody is there to celebrate and so right now I think we are in a good place but as I told you before, when the window is closing then we know the answer.”
