Dons Sign Molloy and Ambrose
Aberdeen began their summer transfer business with the signing announcements of Gavin Molloy and Peter Ambrose. The news that seemed earlier in the day a slight distraction to the Euro 2024 revelry, evolved following the debacle in Munich to present us all with a crumb of comfort and set the mind wandering to July 13th, and our opening fixture of the season.
The club also announced the departure of Kelle Roos, Anthony Steward, Johnny Hayes and Connor Barron. The latter has been the subject of much speculation both domestically, in England and abroad. The Dons will be entitled to some compensation when his final destination is determined. Also leaving are Stefan Gartenmann and Killian Phillips. The Danish centre-back had enjoyed a strong end to the season but he will not be part of Jimmy Thelin’s plans for season 2024/25.
In addition, the following youth players have also been released, the most notable being Kieran Ngwenya who made two first team appearances: Kieran Ngwenya, Finlay Murray, Kai Watson, Aaron Reid, Chris Kondolo and Reuben Smillie.
Gavin Molloy
Age: 22
Nationality: Republic of Ireland
Position: Centre Back
Molloy is a left-footed defensive player, who has played in a number of positions across the back line and into midfield. He has made 79 appearances for Shelbourne since making his debut in 2022.
He will bring competition to a back-line and adds another left-sided player to the mix alongside Richard Jensen, Jack MacKenzie and James McGarry.
Peter Ambrose
Age: 22
Nationality: Nigeria
Position: Centre Forward
Ambrose joins from Hungarian outfit Újpest FC, who finished 10th last season. He is a fast, powerful forward who bagged nine goals in 31 appearances last year. for context, Bojan Miovski was signed from relegated MTK in 2022 and scored eight times in his last season in the Hungarian top flight.
The Nigerian would at first glance seem to be a more typical Thelin signing and his pace should seems to correlate with the fast breaking style his Elfsborg side have became known for.
