In a worrying sign of competence that will surely turn out to be misplaced optimism, Aberdeen concluded their third transfer of the summer window with the acquisition of Saint Johnstone goalkeeper, Dimitar Mitov.
Following the departure of Kelle Roos, the Dons activated the Bulgarian’s release clause to bring him north. Mitov, unlike Roos, proved capable of saving a penalty, when he denied Theo Bair in the last game of the season as Saints stayed up. He was awared the Perth club’s Player of the Year award.
According to Opta Analyst, Mitov faced shots worth an XG of 58.4 but only conceded 46, preventing 12.4 goals. Second on the list, however, is our man Roos, who prevented 11.1 goals according to the data. He also had the third highest save percentage of 71.6% behind Will Dennis and Zander Clark.
Aside from the stats, Mitov passes the old fashioned eye test. He is a very good keeper and frustrating to watch when he is stopping your team from scoring. Of the three signings so far, it is the one that fans can be most confident will be a success. He will be operating under a new goalkeeping coach as Craig Samson has made the move to Leith to join the Hibs revolution under David Gray.
Mitov will become the third Bulgarian to play for Aberdeen after the unforgettable Illian Kiriakov and Tsanko Tsvetanov.
Welcome Dimitar.
